Lesson 1: Color Theory

“All colors are friends with their neighbors and the lovers of their opposites”
~Marc Chagall
Lesson 2: Playing With Color
We will experiment and explore how our knowledge of color theory will allow us to play with color to create exciting images full of happy accidents.
“What I like about watercolors is that a lot of happy accidents happen.”
~Jayne Seymour
Lesson 3: Light In Nature
We will create paintings with contrasting color values.
“Light in nature creates the movement of colors.”
– Robert Delaunay
Lesson 4: Creating Form
You will learn to see and use basic shapes to form the structure of the bird you choose to illustrate.
Once the drawing is constructed you will add details, color and a background with watercolors.
“There are two things in the painter, the eye and the mind; each of them should aid the other.”
– Paul Cezanne
Lesson 5: Seascape
You will put your watercolor skills to use as you set up horizontal bands of color that represent the sky and sea on a beautiful summer day.
If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint.”
— Edward Hopper
Lesson 6: Landscape
You will explore creative ways to use color and brush strokes to create the feeling of a beautiful scene.
You will use a visual image (your own photograph or an image that will be provided for you) to create a landscape.
“Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.”
~ Mary Lou Cook
Lesson 7: Precision and Realism
Albrect Durer created this image in 1503.
The painting reflects the artist’s love of nature and his exacting attention to detail.
The composition and delicate rendering of the dainty plants was revolutionary in its day.
We will follow Durer’s example to paint a detailed image of an object from nature.
“I believe art is embedded in nature, and that the artist's role is to extract this inherent beauty.”
Albrect Durer
