Lesson 1: Playful Use of Lines

Lines come in all forms… straight, curvy, long, short, and many more.

Beginning drawing with a warm up consisting of all sorts of lines is a great way to develop your hand and brain coordination.

Be playful and relaxed.

Make drawing lines an adventure.

"A drawing is simply a line going for a walk." Paul Klee (1879-1940) German-Swiss artist

Lesson 2: Let’s Doodle!

Doodling is much maligned. But, doodling is a great way to improve your drawing skills and much more.

So let’s Doodle!

Creative Problem-Solving: Doodling activates the brain's default networks. It bypasses analytical blocks, making it easier to visualize complex ideas, connect concepts, and spark new ideas. ‍

Lesson 3: Using Basic Shapes

Learning to identify the basic shapes that make up the fundamental structure of what you draw is an important first step to a successful drawing.

We will review both geometric and organic shapes.

Then we will apply our knowledge of shapes to create shell drawings.

‍ ‍“I’ve had a life-long passion for drawing shapes, aiming for my lines to bring subjects to life.”

Hokusai

Lesson 4: Value & Texture

Learn to make your simple sketch come to life by using your pencil to create the feel and dimension of the object in your sketch.

Pencil lines can be used to make a range of textures such a water, feathers, fur, and more.

Adding shading tones from the blackest black to to whitest white and every shade of gray will enhance the definition of the textures.

‍ ‍“I like the quality of a pencil. It helps me get to the core of a thing.” Andrew Wyeth

Lesson 5: Exploration Journey

You will create a pathway into an imaginary landscape. Using the drawing skills of line, shape, value and texture, your pencil will transport you to a place only you can create.

“With a pencil and white sheet of paper to hand…I would plunge into it, convinced that I would find my way again, in a maze of lines which at first glance would seem to go nowhere. And, upon opening my eyes, I would get the very strong impression of something ‘never seen’.” - Andre Masson

Lesson 6: 1 Point Perspective

Create a more formal drawing using a ruler and a vanishing point.

Choose your setting… a dock, a tree lined street, perhaps a cityscape.

Experience how you can create an scene you could “walk into”.

‍”Drawing is not what one sees but what one can make others see."
Edgar Dega(1834 - 1917) French artist

Lesson 7: Still Life Drawing

Tap into your knowledge of lines, shapes, value, and texture to design a classic still life drawing of fruit or flowers.

Learn to gently plot out the format of your design with lightly drawn lines and shapes.

Take time to notice each exquisite detail of your subject.

Allow the pencil to breathe life into your image with the use of texture and value.

“To practice art, no matter how well or how poorly, is a way to make your soul grow. So do it!" - Kurt Vonnegut
